How to Work Out Your Face Shape

Working out what face shape you have can be a bit daunting, but it's an essential step in determining the most flattering hairstyle, makeup techniques, and glasses style for you.

Determine the Basic Shape

The first step in determining your face shape is to identify the basic shape. There are six basic face shapes: oval, round, square, heart, diamond, and oblong.

  • Oval: An oval face is longer than it is wide, with a rounded jawline and forehead that is slightly wider than the chin.

  • Round: A round face has a rounded jawline and cheekbones, with a width and length that are almost equal.

  • Square: A square face has a strong jawline and forehead, with a width and length that are almost equal.

  • Heart: A heart-shaped face has a wide forehead and cheekbones, with a narrow chin.

  • Diamond: A diamond-shaped face has a narrow forehead and jawline, with wide cheekbones.

  • Oblong: An oblong face is longer than it is wide, with a straight and often long forehead, and a narrow chin.

Measure Your Face

Once you have identified your basic face shape, the next step is to measure your face to confirm your findings.

  • Oval: Measure the length of your face from the hairline to the chin, and the width at the widest point of the forehead and at the cheekbones. These measurements should be almost equal.

  • Round: Measure the length and width of your face, and compare the measurements. The length should be slightly smaller than the width.

  • Square: Measure the length and width of your face, and compare the measurements. The length and width should be almost equal.

  • Heart: Measure the length and width of your face, and compare the measurements. The width at the forehead and cheekbones should be wider than the chin.

  • Diamond: Measure the length and width of your face, and compare the measurements. The width at the cheekbones should be wider than the forehead and chin.

  • Oblong: Measure the length of your face from the hairline to the chin, and the width at the widest point of the forehead and at the cheekbones. The length should be longer than the width.

Look at Your Features

Another way to determine your face shape is to look at your features.

  • Oval: Oval faces have soft and balanced features, with a slightly curved jawline and forehead that is slightly wider than the chin.

  • Round: Round faces have soft and rounded features, with a rounded jawline and cheekbones.

  • Square: Square faces have strong and angular features, with a strong jawline and forehead.

  • Heart: Heart-shaped faces have wider foreheads and cheekbones, with a narrow and pointed chin.

  • Diamond: Diamond-shaped faces have wide cheekbones, with a narrow forehead and chin.

  • Oblong: Oblong faces have long and narrow features, with a straight forehead and a narrow chin.

Take Note of Your Hairline

Your hairline can also give you a clue about your face shape.

  • Oval: Oval faces have a slightly curved hairline.

  • Round: Round faces have a rounded hairline.

  • Square: Square faces have a straight hairline.

  • Heart: Heart-shaped faces have a widow's peak or a V-shaped hairline.

  • Diamond: Diamond-shaped faces have a narrow hairline.

  • Oblong: Oblong faces have a straight hairline.
